Advancing research impact through strategic research management

Dr Edward Tan was recognised for his contributions to strengthening research administration at GERI. He shared his insights at the Australasian Research Management Society (ARMS) Conference 2026 in Perth, Australia on how research management can support system-level impact.
Research management plays an important role in ensuring that evidence can move beyond research studies and contribute to meaningful improvements in healthcare, policy and community settings.
This contribution was recognised when Dr Edward Tan, Assistant Director at GERI, received the 2026 RMIT Paul Taylor Award.

A key part of Dr Tan’s work has been shifting how research administration is understood at GERI, moving from a compliance and gatekeeping function to a more strategic role embedded throughout the research lifecycle.
This change has helped ensure that research findings are better connected to policy, clinical practice, and community structures.

At the conference, Dr Tan also delivered a presentation on "Shifting beyond Projects and Programmes: Driving System-Level Impact", drawing on GERI's experience to explore how research management professionals can help align research with broader policy ecosystems, beyond the delivery of individual projects.
His presentation highlighted that lasting impact requires research to be integrated into how care is delivered and how policy is made.
This creates the conditions for research findings and knowledge gained to continue beyond the funding cycle, so that findings can be sustained and scaled over time.
