How do we bridge the gap between mobility and real-world solutions for older adults? At the NHG Health Musculoskeletal Day 2026, GERI researchers led a World Café as part of the BE-FIT study collaboration to tackle exactly this challenge.
Working alongside co-Principal Investigators Dr Bryan Tan Yijia from Woodlands Health and Dr Navrag Singh from Singapore-ETH Centre, we brought together over 30 participants from government agencies, community organisations, healthcare and research sectors to discuss preliminary findings from the study.

Discussions from three rounds of small group sessions generated insights and potential intervention recommendations on issues such as older adults’ fear of falling and how these can be addressed through social aspects as well as the built environment.

These takeaways will help to identify prominent areas to address and guide the design of plausible solutions for the next phase of the study, which aims to promote participation in activities outside their homes in older adults with osteoarthritis and high falls risk.

Dr Tou Nien Xiang, Research Fellow, has been leading GERI’s implementation science contributions to the BE-FIT study. He shared: “The World Café is a collaborative, participatory approach in implementation science that creates space for conversations that matter. Given the complex interplay between individuals and the built environment in shaping one’s physical and social activity participation, it taps into the collective experience and expertise of participants to generate diverse perspectives.”
