Following recent changes to the Community Care Apartments scheme, GERI's Dr Tan Woan Shin spoke to CNA on the need for an evidence-informed approach to housing for older adults, while ensuring existing environments enable them to age well.
In a CNA feature on the recent changes to the Community Care Apartments scheme, Dr Tan Woan Shin (Deputy Executive Director and Lead Scientist, GERI) shared the following insights:
Creating supportive environments for ageing well in the community requires testing a range of housing options across the public and private sectors, both in terms of infrastructure and service offerings, before adapting them based on market and residents’ feedback.
Evaluating how such models perform in practice is essential to building the evidence base to guide how they can continue to evolve.
Most Singaporeans own their homes, so ageing in place is often the default. Existing living environments should therefore be equally supportive for Singapore's older population, enabling them to function well, have timely access to care, and do the things that matter to them.
