A Lesson in Holistic Care: Crossing the Chasm between the Humanities and Healthcare

Caring for older adults in hospitals is complex and fraught with risks. There is still much to be done to pursue the government’s strategic goals to go beyond quality to value. With finite resources, unplanned readmission rates of older adults could worsen the bed crunch situation in Singapore. In addition, hospitalised older adults commonly face issues such as immobility, deconditioning, loss of independence, functional decline, and falls. For those with multiple co-morbidities who require treatment with numerous medications, the hazard of polypharmacy demands that a more collaborative approach is taken to ensure appropriate and safe prescription of medications.

This webinar aims to share and discuss relevant research findings from Geriatric Education and Research Institute (GERI) and its partners to untangle certain challenges faced in the hospital setting. Modifiable risk factors of unplanned readmissions, inappropriate prescribing, and interventions to improve mobility during hospital stay will be discussed.

The event is organised by GERI, in collaboration with the Chapter of Geriatricians (Academy of Medicine Singapore) and Society for Geriatric Medicine (Singapore).

The KPS is conducted regularly by GERI, as a knowledge translation initiative that brings together various stakeholders, to share research findings and exchange knowledge, in order to enhance eldercare practice and policy formulation.
